I'm a historian and educator committed to the democratic mission of higher education. In my scholarship, writing, and teaching, as an advocate for educational change, and through the development of programs, projects, and partnerships, I've worked to make the academy more publicly-engaged, inclusive, and vibrant. At various times, I've focused on the public humanities, on community-based teaching and learning, and on the needs of adult, nontraditional students. Currently I direct a national initiative called Bringing Theory to Practice, which seeks to catalyze innovation in higher education through the renewal of its guiding purposes: active learning, meaningful work, democratic citizenship, and the flourishing of all students. Here's a portfolio of my work.
